At Marino Software, our vision is to save the world from bad software. So what does that mean? For us, "bad software" isn't just an inconvenience. It's a risk. And a critical one in domains like healthcare.
Bad software arises from poor design, rushed development, and inadequate testing. It ignores established standards. That’s why we’re committed to building software that is properly researched, user-tested, and validated, ensuring it always meets the highest standards of quality, privacy, and reliability.
One of the examples of how we’re advancing this vision, is in our project work with the Rotunda Hospital.
Through our work with the Rotunda Hospital, we’re developing a prototype SMART (Substitutable Medical Applications Reusable Technologies) on Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) app, to support rapid and accurate venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk assessment.
VTE is the leading direct cause of maternal death, with risk peaking in the week following birth. By leveraging FHIR standards, we’re enabling clinicians to quickly assess and manage VTE risk, improving outcomes for mothers during this critical period.
FHIR technology is a game-changer in the healthcare sector, offering a modern, standardised approach to exchanging healthcare information.
FHIR enables interoperability between different health systems, ensuring that data flows seamlessly across platforms. With the adoption of FHIR, we can create systems that are not only interoperable but also modular and adaptable, aligning with the SMART HealthIT vision of substitutable healthcare applications. This vision promises immense benefits for developers, healthcare providers, and patients alike, by fostering an ecosystem of apps that can be easily integrated, evaluated, and deployed:
SMART HealthIT was initially funded in the USA, during the first term of the Obama Administration, by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Led by innovation luminary Clayton Christensen and leaders in informatics, these visionaries laid the bedrock for good software.
Health software that is serious about good design based on meeting needs is typically built on established, validated industry standards and is designed with privacy at the core. For example, Apple's Health Records API incorporates the SMART on FHIR APIs.
The growing adoption of SMART and FHIR APIs by EHR vendors and health systems is streamlining the process of connecting innovative apps like ours to clinical systems. Backed by strong regulatory support, this trend ensures that healthcare software can meet the rigorous demands of clinical use while maintaining the flexibility needed to evolve with technological advancements.
Marino Software is committed to applying these principles to deliver software that truly meets clinical and patient needs. We invite healthcare teams to join us in this mission.
